Extinction! is a comic book suite of beats; a collage of pop culture staged as the soundtrack for the dance party at the dawn of the apocalypse!
The good guys are fighting for the future of existence itself: Greta Thunberg: our hero; Kurt Vonnegut: the prophet; and Marvin Gaye: the voice of love - or the muse of distraction??? Gotham crumbles as it's people are lulled into a self-indulgent stupor by the Spirit of Consumerism-Incarnate. Will our heroes' songs awaken the people to overcome the evils of climate change, classism, and war - or is the fate of the world doomed? Find out in Safe Jazz's new mixtape: Extinction!
Juxtaposing sounds of horror, protest, and pop, this body of music came together over the course of 3 weeks, using samples chopped from top 40s hits, blockbuster movies, and viral videos. The main recorded instruments were a Yamaha DD65 drum machine from Goodwill, a half broken MicroKorgXL synth, and a Korg CR-4 track cassette recorder and multi-effects unit (recently deceased). Extinction! marks the first installment of Safe Jazz's "Frozen Pizza" collection: quick beats made with cheap ingredients, cooked up in short order for an easy listening snack.

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
